Terms, factors and powers

Polynomial worksheets

Recognize a polynomial’s structure, find its degree and work with its terms. Practice addition, subtraction, multiplication, factoring or exact division, with space to show the reasoning and a separate key.

Choose a worksheet

Every term needs a partner

  1. Start with two binomials(2x + 3)(x − 4)
  2. Form all four products2x² − 8x + 3x − 12
  3. Collect the matching terms2x² − 5x − 12
The cross products −8x and 3x combine. The quadratic and constant terms remain separate.

Recognize terms and degrees

Separate the number of terms from the powers within each term. Classify expressions first, then compare their degrees.

Choose by readiness

Term recognition, signed arithmetic and exponent rules are different skills. Use a focused worksheet to see which skill needs practice before combining them.

Recognize a term

Start when variables and powers are familiar. Compare one, two and three complete terms, keeping multiplication within each term.

Open this starting point →

Build from prime factors

Start with coefficients from 4 to 20 and one or two unpowered variables. Write every prime factor before using exponent notation.

Open this starting point →

Track a minus sign through a group

Combine two groups with four or five input terms. Use signed arithmetic to remove parentheses without losing a sign.

Open this starting point →

Organize every term pair

Keep the first factor monic while learning to form all four products. Then vary the second factor’s leading coefficient.

Open this starting point →

Term count and degree answer different questions

4x² − 3x + 7 has three terms, so it is a trinomial. Its degree is 2 because that is the greatest degree among its terms. Changing the coefficient of x² does not change either fact unless that coefficient becomes zero.

For a term with several variables, add the exponents: 5x²y³ has degree 5. For a polynomial, compare the degrees of its nonzero terms after collecting like terms. A nonzero constant has degree 0; the zero polynomial has undefined degree.

Use the correct rule for the operation

In x³ × x², add exponents to get x⁵. In (x³)², multiply exponents to get x⁶. An outside power applies to the whole grouped factor: (2x³)² = 4x⁶.

Negative exponents represent reciprocals. x⁻² means 1/x² and requires x ≠ 0. The multiplying-monomials resource includes these exponent exercises; an expression with a negative variable exponent is not an ordinary polynomial.

Connect the prerequisites

Prime factorization

Make numerical factorization secure before adding variable factors to the same process.

Factors and multiples →

Equivalent expressions

Review distribution and like terms before working with several powers or grouped polynomials.
