Worked example
Simplify (3x² + 2x − 1) − (x² − 5x + 4).
2x² + 7x − 5.
Subtracting the second group gives −x² + 5x − 4. Combine the quadratic, linear and constant terms separately.
Choose an adding and subtracting polynomials worksheet
Start with two polynomials and four displayed terms so learners can focus on matching powers and distributing one outside sign. Move through the five- and six-term choices before adding a third polynomial; the seven-, eight- and nine-term choices require learners to track two operations across three groups.
Every worksheet has 10 one-variable questions, and the default selection mixes all six structures. A plus or minus sign connects each group. Within each group, powers from 0 through 5 do not repeat, and nonzero integer coefficients have magnitudes from 1 through 9. The variable, coefficient size, power range and question count are set for you.
What do the four-through-nine term choices mean?
They count all terms displayed before simplification. The two-polynomial choices use groups of 2 + 2, 2 + 3 or 3 + 3 terms. The three-polynomial choices use 2 + 2 + 3, 2 + 3 + 3 or 3 + 3 + 3 terms.
How should a polynomial after a minus sign be handled?
Change the sign of every term in that group, then remove the parentheses. Combine terms only when they have the same variable raised to the same power; keep all other terms separate.
