Connect the hands to the passing hour

A clock shows both hours and minutes at once. Give each hand a job, then connect their movement before calculating intervals.

  1. Follow the short handAt 3:30 it sits halfway between 3 and 4. The hour is still three; the hand does not jump only at the hour.
  2. Count around the faceThe long hand counts minutes. Start with hour and half-hour times, then five-minute intervals, then individual minutes.
  3. Separate a time from a duration2:45 names a clock time. “Forty-five minutes” measures how long something lasts. Use a timeline when moving between them.
