Ready to print

Start with a ready-made worksheet

Read the stated time. Draw both hands from the center, making the minute hand longer. Place the hour hand partway toward the next numeral when minutes have passed; use the teacher reference to check the positions.

Download the practice pages alone, or include a separate answer key or teacher model. Longer activities may use more than one page.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Draw a shorter hour hand and a longer minute hand whose positions represent the same stated time.

Worked example

Draw the hands to show 8:20.

Point the longer minute hand to 4 and the shorter hour hand one-third of the way from 8 toward 9.

Four five-minute intervals total 20 minutes, so the minute hand points to 4. Twenty minutes is one-third of 60 minutes, so the hour hand is one-third of the way through the hour that began at 8.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Have the learner say the hour and minutes separately before drawing either hand.
  • Use custom times to compare related examples, such as the same hour with different minute positions; use random sets once the construction is secure.
  • Judge the intended hand positions and clear length difference, not drawing neatness. The teacher reference supports discussion of approximate hand placement.
