Identify the start, end and any day or AM/PM context. Count forward in convenient steps and total the duration. Keep elapsed time separate from the clock time at which the interval ends.
Download the practice pages alone, or include a separate answer key or teacher model. Longer activities may use more than one page.
Customize this worksheetLearning objective
Measure the interval between two clock times without treating minutes as decimal hundredths.
Worked example
1 hour 35 minutes.
There are 25 minutes to noon, then 1 hour to 1:00 PM, then 10 minutes to 1:10 PM. Adding these parts gives 1 hour and 35 minutes; crossing noon changes the AM/PM label, not the length of an hour.
Teaching notes
From 11:40 PM to 1:15 AM the next day, count 20 minutes to midnight, 1 hour to 1:00 AM and 15 more minutes. The elapsed time is 1 hour 35 minutes. The day changes at midnight; the hour still contains 60 minutes.
AM/PM questions can cross noon or midnight. Starting-time steps sets the starting grid only; it is not a filter for overnight questions and does not force the ending time onto that grid. The hours-only and hours-and-minutes settings control duration form.
Use the two-clock activity for analog reading plus duration calculation, or the elapsed-time table to fill a missing start, end or duration.

Starting-time steps constrain only the starting clock: a 20-minute start step does not require the end or duration to be a multiple of 20 minutes.
