Polynomials practice

Naming polynomials by type and degree worksheets

Name ten collected polynomials by both their term-count type and total degree. Choose any nonempty mix of one through six terms, then use a separate worked key to compare every term degree.

Ready to print

Start with a ready-made worksheet

Count the collected nonzero terms to name the type. Add the exponents in each term, then use the greatest term degree as the polynomial degree.

Download the practice pages alone, or include a separate answer key or teacher model. Longer activities may use more than one page.

Name each polynomial two ways

Count the collected nonzero terms for the type. Add the exponents within each term and use the greatest sum for the degree.

The student page keeps Type and Degree on separate labeled lines. The key shows every term degree before selecting the maximum.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Classify each polynomial by its number of nonzero terms and greatest total term degree.

Worked example

Name 5x²y³ − 2xy + 8 by type and degree.

Trinomial; degree 5.

There are three nonzero terms. Their total degrees are 5, 2 and 0, so the greatest degree is 5.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Mark the term boundaries before counting.
  • Add all variable exponents within each term.
  • Keep the type and degree as two separate answers.
  • Use the worked key to check every term degree, not only the maximum.
