Start with a ready-made worksheet

Find each term’s degree by adding its variable exponents. The greatest term degree is the degree of the polynomial.

Download the practice pages alone, or include a separate answer key or teacher model. Longer activities may use more than one page.

Follow the structure before calculating

A term is a product of a coefficient and variable powers. Addition and subtraction separate terms; parentheses organize whole polynomials. Keep those boundaries clear before counting terms, finding degrees or applying an operation.

Each customized student worksheet and its answer key use the same generated questions. Start with a focused set of structures, check the worked reasoning, then generate a fresh set when the learner is ready.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Use the largest total degree among the nonzero terms of a polynomial.

Worked example

Find the degree of 5x²y³ − 2xy + 8.

The term degrees are 5, 2 and 0, so the polynomial has degree 5.

For 5x²y³, add 2 + 3. The coefficient 5 does not affect the degree, and the nonzero constant 8 has degree zero.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Write a small degree above each term.
  • Include the implied exponent 1 on a variable.
  • Ignore a nonzero numerical coefficient when counting powers.
  • Treat the zero polynomial separately: its degree is undefined.
