Follow the structure before calculating

A term is a product of a coefficient and variable powers. Addition and subtraction separate terms; parentheses organize whole polynomials. Keep those boundaries clear before counting terms, finding degrees or applying an operation.

Each customized student worksheet and its answer key use the same generated questions. Start with a focused set of structures, check the worked reasoning, then generate a fresh set when the learner is ready.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Distinguish degree from term count, distribute outside signs exactly, and form every term pair in a polynomial product.

Worked example

Name 3x² - 2x + 5, then expand (x² + 2)(x² + 3x).

The first is a degree-2 trinomial. The product is x⁴ + 3x³ + 2x² + 6x.

Degree comes from the greatest exponent, while the term name comes from counting terms. In the product, each term of the first factor multiplies every term of the second.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Keep degree and term count as separate observations.
  • When subtracting a group, change every sign inside it.
  • Write all four, six or nine term-pair products before collecting.
  • Use the answer key to compare the distributed line with the collected result.
