Linear functions practice

Finding slope from two points worksheets

Calculate exact slopes from ten pairs of integer-coordinate points. Practice signed differences and reduced fractions, with a separate key that explains the slope calculation.

Ready to print

Start with a ready-made worksheet

Use m = (y₂ − y₁)/(x₂ − x₁). Keep the point order the same in the numerator and denominator, then simplify.

Download the practice pages alone, or include a separate answer key or teacher model. Longer activities may use more than one page.

Connect the calculation with the graph

Work with exact slopes and intercepts. Coordinate graphs use unit intervals from −5 to 5 on both axes, and the worked key connects the given information to the requested values, equation or completed graph.

Choose a focused mode when options are available. The settings change what the learner is given and what they must produce; the student preview and downloadable PDF use the same questions.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Use two ordered pairs to calculate a constant rate of change.

Worked example

Find the slope through (−3, 4) and (1, −2).

m = (−2 − 4) ÷ (1 − (−3)) = −6/4 = −3/2.

The horizontal change is four units while the vertical change is negative six. Reversing both point orders gives the same slope; reversing only one changes its sign.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Write the coordinate labels before substituting.
  • Use parentheses when subtracting a negative coordinate.
  • Reduce the final fraction and keep its denominator positive.
  • Connect a negative result with a line that falls from left to right.

Every coordinate grid uses the fixed −5 to 5 unit window. Graph-only modes omit computed response fields; answer editions complete every requested line or solution region.
