Decide whether the extended supporting lines are parallel. Treat every drawn line, ray or segment as part of a complete line extending in both directions.

Classify the extended supporting lines

Each line, ray or segment represents part of a complete supporting line. Extend both straight paths mentally before deciding their relationship. Short pieces that do not touch on the page can still have supporting lines that intersect.

Parallel lines remain distinct and keep the same direction. Perpendicular lines intersect at exactly 90 degrees. A different crossing is labelled intersecting, not perpendicular.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Recognize equal direction and constant separation even when lines are rotated or only portions of them are drawn.

Worked example

Two short segments slant upward at the same rate and remain distinct. Are their supporting lines parallel?

Yes.

Extending each segment preserves the same direction, so the supporting lines never meet. The lengths and endpoint positions of the drawn portions do not affect the relationship.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Slide a ruler along one line without turning it and compare the second direction.
  • Include horizontal, vertical and slanted examples so parallel does not become synonymous with horizontal.
  • Ask where the lines would meet if both were extended.
  • Contrast a clear oblique intersection with a perpendicular intersection.
