Decide whether the extended supporting lines are perpendicular. Treat every drawn line, ray or segment as part of a complete line extending in both directions.

Classify the extended supporting lines

Each line, ray or segment represents part of a complete supporting line. Extend both straight paths mentally before deciding their relationship. Short pieces that do not touch on the page can still have supporting lines that intersect.

Parallel lines remain distinct and keep the same direction. Perpendicular lines intersect at exactly 90 degrees. A different crossing is labelled intersecting, not perpendicular.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Recognize a 90-degree intersection in horizontal, vertical and rotated line pairs.

Worked example

A rising line crosses a falling line and a square marks one angle at the intersection. Are the lines perpendicular?

Yes.

The square states that one angle is exactly 90 degrees. Intersecting lines create four angles there, so all four are right angles in this case.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Rotate a square corner against an intersection to separate exact right angles from visual guesses.
  • Show perpendicular lines that are both slanted, not only a vertical and horizontal pair.
  • Ask learners to locate the intersection of the extended lines before classifying them.
  • Pair one perpendicular example with an obvious non-right oblique crossing.
