Ready to print

Start with a ready-made worksheet

Classify each angle as acute, right, obtuse or straight. Use the picture in the first section and the stated degree measure in the second section.

Download the practice pages alone, or include a separate answer key or teacher model. Longer activities may use more than one page.

Read the given facts, not the page orientation

Angles keep the same measure when a diagram is rotated. A right-angle square is an exact fact; otherwise use the stated degree measures when they are supplied. The first ten questions on the classification sheet intentionally omit measures so learners reason from the picture.

Naming practice uses directed rays. Read ray BA from vertex B through A. In a multi-ray figure, every pair of rays determines an angle, including a larger angle that spans smaller sectors.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Connect the size of a turn with the four angle classes and use 90 and 180 degrees as exact boundaries.

Worked example

How should a 91-degree angle be classified?

Obtuse.

A right angle is exactly 90 degrees. Because 91 is greater than 90 but less than 180, the angle is obtuse. A straight angle must measure exactly 180 degrees.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Establish the exact boundaries first: less than 90, equal to 90, between 90 and 180, and equal to 180.
  • Rotate a right-angle corner to show that orientation does not change the angle class.
  • Ask for an estimate before measuring a drawn example.
  • Compare near-boundary measures such as 89, 90 and 91 degrees aloud.
