Keep the printed spacing accurate

Physical spacing is preserved in the PDF. The number of whole cells may change with paper size, language or page note. The caption reports the resolved grid, rather than scaling the cells to fill the sheet.

Select the matching paper size in the generator and printer settings. Print at Actual size or 100%; Fit to page and shrink options change physical distances. Check a known interval with a ruler before using the paper for measurement.

Use a consistent square grid to organize calculations, draw arrays, compare areas or construct a graph.

Worked example

How wide are ten spaces on 1/4 inch graph paper?

2 1/2 inches, or 63.5 mm.

Ten spaces measure 10 × 1/4 = 2 1/2 inches. There are eleven grid lines bounding those ten spaces. Each inch is exactly 25.4 mm.

  • Use larger cells for counters, arrays and early area models.
  • Ask learners to label their scale before plotting data.
  • Compare rectangles with the same area and different perimeters.
  • Measure a printed cell with a ruler before using the page for scale drawings.
