Write the problem number near the margin and give each step its own line.

Aligned steps make it easier to follow a calculation and identify where a mistake occurs. Add a brief explanation when a step uses a new rule.

  • Keep equals signs aligned where that clarifies a calculation.
  • Leave a blank line between unrelated questions.
