What this activity builds
Construct shapes and compare distances using a regular lattice of points.
Worked example
On a 1 cm dot grid, what is the area of a rectangle three spaces wide and two spaces high?
6 cm².
The side lengths are 3 cm and 2 cm, so the area is 3 × 2 = 6 cm². Its corners span four dot positions across and three dot positions vertically.

- Compare different shapes with the same perimeter.
- Ask learners to explain why a diagonal is longer than a horizontal step.
- Check printed spacing with a ruler before assigning physical measurements.
