Learning objective

What this activity builds

Explain how whole and fractional place values contribute to a US dollar amount, including tenths and hundredths of a dollar.

Worked example

In $3,472.85, what are the place and value of 8?

Tenths; $0.80

Eight tenths of a dollar is eighty cents. The last digit, 5, is in the hundredths place and contributes five cents. Place names describe positions; dollar amounts describe their values.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • All amounts are in US dollars in every worksheet language. Changing the printed language changes the wording and number punctuation, not the currency.
  • The digit-width control counts only digits before the decimal separator. Three whole digits produce amounts from $100.00 through $999.99 when zeros are allowed.
  • Keep two decimal places in monetary answers: a digit worth 400 dollars is written as $400.00.
  • Name fractional positions as tenths and hundredths. Then connect one tenth of a dollar with ten cents and one hundredth with one cent.
  • Use the no-zero setting for initial practice, then allow zeros to explore values such as $0.00 or a zero placeholder between occupied places.
  • These sheets identify places inside written amounts. Use the money collection for counting coins, bills or change.
