One digit, two questions

Identify the underlined digit, name its position, then write the value it contributes. Each sheet has ten questions and twenty marks. The separate answer key preserves the same marked digits and page breaks.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Use the decimal separator as a reference point when identifying a digit’s position and its exact contribution.

Worked example

In 4,372.5086, identify the place and value of 8.

Thousandths; 0.008

The 8 is third to the right of the decimal separator. It represents eight thousandths. The zero in the hundredths place keeps that position occupied without adding value.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Begin with one decimal place and name tenths before introducing a longer fractional part.
  • The available whole-number widths are four, five and six digits. Use a chart alongside the worksheet if those larger places are still unfamiliar.
  • Four decimal places extend through ten-thousandths. There is no oneths position to the right of the separator.
  • Targets cover both sides of the separator. Read the marked digit before deciding whether its unit is larger or smaller than one.
  • Zeros, when allowed, can also be selected. A zero fractional digit has a named place but contributes zero to the total.
  • Printed number punctuation follows the selected worksheet language, while the digits and mathematical answers remain the same.
