Learning objective

What this reference explains

Distinguish whole-number periods from fractional places and explain the value of each digit on either side of the decimal separator.

Read a place together

In the fractional part .34567, what does the 6 represent?

Six ten-thousandths: 0.0006

The places after the decimal are tenths, hundredths, thousandths, ten-thousandths and hundred-thousandths. The 6 is fourth, so its value is 6/10,000.

Teaching notes

Connect the labels with the number

  • There is no oneths place after the decimal separator. The first fractional place is tenths.
  • Read .34567 as thirty-four thousand five hundred sixty-seven hundred-thousandths when discussing the value of the whole fractional part.
  • The chart uses a point in English and the selected language’s decimal convention in translated versions. Its exact digits stay the same.
  • This reference extends far beyond an introductory decimal lesson. Begin with the tenths and hundredths columns when those are the learner’s current focus.
  • There is no separate answer key: every place and digit is already shown.
