Learning objective

What this reference explains

Read a large whole number by its three-digit periods and explain how a digit’s position determines its value.

Read a place together

In 123,456,789,012, what is the value of the 7?

700,000

The 7 is in the hundred-thousands place. It represents seven groups of one hundred thousand, even though it is only one written digit.

Teaching notes

Connect the labels with the number

  • The panels read left to right, then continue on the next row: billions, millions, thousands and ones.
  • Use the complete number above the panels to keep the groups connected. The split panels make the place labels readable; they are parts of one number.
  • The zero in the last period holds the hundreds place. The final group 012 is read as twelve, not as three unrelated digits.
  • This is a fixed reference chart, not a random exercise. Changing the paper, note or worksheet language preserves its digits.
