Ready to print

Start with a ready-made worksheet

Use the model key to name each block’s value. Count the blocks in each place and write the total. Ones-only sheets have one counting response per task.

Download the practice pages alone, or include a separate answer key or teacher model. Longer activities may use more than one page.

Count blocks, then name their value

The preview shows the first student page. Downloads contain every task; adding answers gives a separate teacher model with the same drawings, completed block counts and totals.

The model key shows what each block is worth. Answer spaces ask how many blocks are in each group and how much they represent altogether.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Distinguish the number of blocks from the value each block represents, then compose a whole number from its place values.

Worked example

What number do 3 hundred-flats, 2 ten-rods and 6 unit cubes represent?

326

The block counts are 3, 2 and 6, but their values are 300, 20 and 6. Add those place values: 300 + 20 + 6 = 326.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Ones-only and tens-and-ones sheets have eight tasks. Hundreds sheets have four, and thousands sheets have three so the larger models stay readable.
  • The selected counts control how many blocks can appear in each active place. Ones always use 1–9, and thousands use one or two cubes. No active place has a zero count.
  • Selections for higher places stay available when you switch to a simpler sheet. An active place must have at least one selected count.
  • Use real counters or blocks to model a trade before asking learners to read the drawing. One rod is one object worth ten, not one object worth one.
  • Every task has a different combination. A short sheet does not necessarily use every selected count.
