One digit, two questions

Identify the underlined digit, name its position, then write the value it contributes. Each sheet has ten questions and twenty marks. The separate answer key preserves the same marked digits and page breaks.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Distinguish a digit, the name of its place and the value it contributes to a whole number.

Worked example

In 7,474, what are the place and value of the first 4?

Hundreds; 400

The first 4 is third from the right, so it counts hundreds. The final 4 counts ones. The same written digit can contribute different values depending on its position.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Start with three digits. Ask the learner to say hundreds, tens and ones from a chart before completing a sheet independently.
  • Increase the width only when the larger place names are familiar. Ten-digit practice reaches the billions place.
  • Each sheet has ten unique numbers and two responses per number. There is one mark for the place and one for the value.
  • Every available digit position is selected once before a position repeats. A three-digit sheet therefore revisits places more often than a ten-digit sheet.
  • Turn on zero digits to discuss an empty place: zero hundreds still has the hundreds position, but contributes 0.
  • The answer key repeats the same marked digits and question positions, making side-by-side checking straightforward.
