Reason about the digits and their positions

Use the settings to choose the practice level, then preview every student page and the separate key. Each question keeps its original numbering and position in the answer version.

Long clue lists and translated text continue onto additional pages. Every download includes all the generated questions.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Reconstruct a unique whole number from digit assignments given in an unfamiliar order.

Worked example

Hundreds: 4. Ones: 2. Thousands: 6. Tens: 0. What is the number?

6,402

Arrange the places from largest to smallest: thousands, hundreds, tens, ones. The zero holds the tens place, so all four digits are necessary.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Choose three digits for hundreds, then increase gradually through millions.
  • Every place has exactly one clue. The clues may repeat a digit, but they never conflict or leave a place unspecified.
  • Start with no zero digits, then allow zeros to practice empty positions. The first digit is always nonzero.
  • Five puzzles are included at every width. Longer clue lists continue onto another page instead of shrinking the type.
  • Ask the learner to verify the answer against each clue in the original shuffled order.
