Start with a ready-made worksheet

Read each question carefully. Some ask for a complete number, some for one digit, and others for the name of an underlined place.

Download the practice pages alone, or include a separate answer key or teacher model. Longer activities may use more than one page.

Reason about the digits and their positions

Use the settings to choose the practice level, then preview every student page and the separate key. Each question keeps its original numbering and position in the answer version.

Long clue lists and translated text continue onto additional pages. Every download includes all the generated questions.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Apply place-value reasoning across several representations and response types in one mixed review.

Worked example

Using the digits 4, 0, 2 and 4 exactly once, make the smallest four-digit number.

2,044

Put the smallest nonzero digit first. Place zero next and arrange the remaining digits from smallest to largest. Both copies of 4 must be kept.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Ones are always included. Select the other places that are ready for review; leaving every box empty creates an introductory whole-number review.
  • The highest selected whole place controls the largest context. Reordering and comparison use at least two-digit numbers so that the task stays meaningful.
  • Place-name questions target selected whole places and underline a specific digit. Repeated copies of that digit elsewhere do not change the target.
  • Selected fractional places are covered in digit-lookup questions. Tenths, hundredths and thousandths also allow fractional-unit word-name questions; ten-thousandths use digit lookup.
  • Each sheet includes all five question families. These are mathematical review prompts, not story-based word problems.
  • The separate key follows the same question order and page breaks. Ask learners to explain why an answer is a digit, a number or a place name.
