Start with a ready-made worksheet

Identify the coins and quantities that the question asks about. Work out each relevant group’s value, then combine the subtotals. Some settings add unrelated information; explain why it is excluded instead of automatically adding every number.

Download the practice pages alone, or include a separate answer key or teacher model. Longer activities may use more than one page.

Choose the denominations in each story

For a focused counting-value lesson, select the U.S. coin types and the maximum number of each coin. Every selected denomination appears in the story, and the answer key writes the combined value in dollars.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Translate coin quantities in a story into exact denomination subtotals and a combined money amount.

Worked example

Nora has 3 nickels and 3 dimes in a pouch. What is their combined value?

$0.45.

Three nickels are 15 cents and three dimes are 30 cents. Adding gives 45 cents. Equal coin counts do not give equal subtotals when the denominations differ.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Sketch a small table with coin type, count and value before writing an equation.
  • Use digits first, then number words or mixed wording when reading the counts no longer competes with the money reasoning.
  • The equal-count and half-dollar stories extend beyond simple single-denomination counting. Model these structures before independent work.

Basic coin stories use the number-wording and extra-information settings. Selected-denomination stories use the chosen coin types and maximum count instead; each selected type appears and the key gives its value in dollars.
