Start with a ready-made worksheet

Find the two item categories named by the question. For each category, use the number purchased and its unit price to calculate a subtotal. Add those two subtotals, leaving out information about unrelated purchases or possessions.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Distinguish a unit price from a line total and add the costs belonging to the requested purchase.

Worked example

Sam buys 3 notebooks at $1.25 each and 2 pencils at $0.40 each. What is the total cost?

$4.55.

The notebooks cost 3 × 125 = 375 cents and the pencils cost 2 × 40 = 80 cents. Together they cost 455 cents, or $4.55. There are two item types but five individual items.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Underline quantity and unit price as a pair, then write a line total for each item type.
  • Check an estimate before the exact answer: about $4 for the notebooks and under $1 for the pencils gives a useful scale.
  • Grade 3 curation assumes readiness for repeated addition or multiplication and money notation; simplify the quantities when those skills are still developing.
