Start with a ready-made worksheet

Create one subtotal for each of the three relevant item types. Check that every requested category appears exactly once, then add the subtotals. Extra information, when enabled, is unrelated to the requested total.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Keep three relevant cost groups complete and separate while solving a multistep purchase problem.

Worked example

A club buys 2 folders at $1.50 each, 3 labels at $0.25 each and 1 marker for $2.10. What does it spend?

$5.85.

Folders cost $3.00, labels cost $0.75 and the marker costs $2.10. Their total is $5.85. Writing the three subtotals makes it easier to see that no category has been missed or counted twice.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Use three clearly named rows for the subtotals rather than one long unexplained string of numbers.
  • Ask the learner to explain which story phrase each term represents before checking arithmetic.
  • Compare the same purchase with and without an unrelated detail to practice selecting information without changing the intended calculation.
