Choose the operations and the amount of support

Choose by the learner’s current skills. Mixing operations adds the task of recognizing a sign before choosing a method, even when the individual numbers are familiar.

The preview shows the first student page. Downloads contain the complete worksheet; the version with answers adds a separate key with matching problem positions. More spacious written-method practice may use several pages.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Use the inverse operation while respecting the unknown operand’s position.

Worked example

24 ÷ N = 6

N = 4

The divisor is missing. Since 6 × 4 = 24, dividing 24 by 4 gives six.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • The minimum and maximum control the fact numbers used to build equations; products and dividends can exceed that range.
  • The unknown is an operand, not a missing result. Its position changes the inverse calculation.
  • A range containing only zero is invalid because it cannot produce the required division and uniquely solvable multiplication facts.
