Ready to print

Start with a ready-made worksheet

Find both surface area and volume for each sphere. Convert diameter to radius first and round final answers to hundredths.

Download the practice pages alone, or include a separate answer key or teacher model. Longer activities may use more than one page.

Use one radius for two different measures

Each problem asks for both surface area and volume. If a diameter is given, convert it to a radius before using either formula.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Use one radius to calculate and distinguish a sphere's surface area and volume.

Worked example

A sphere has diameter 6 cm. Find its surface area and volume.

Surface area = 36 pi cm², approximately 113.10 cm²; volume = 36 pi cm³, approximately 113.10 cm³.

The radius is 3 cm. Use 4 pi r² and 4 pi r³/3; equal numerical values here still have different units.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Mark radius before substituting.
  • Keep surface area and volume answers separate.
  • Retain calculator precision until the last step.
