Ready to print

Start with a ready-made worksheet

Find the base area, use the perpendicular solid height, and report cubic units. Round only the final answer to hundredths.

Download the practice pages alone, or include a separate answer key or teacher model. Longer activities may use more than one page.

Start with the area of the base

Prisms and cylinders use V = BH. Pyramids and cones use V = BH/3, with the perpendicular height shown separately from any slant height.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Use base area and perpendicular solid height to calculate volume, including the one-third factor for pyramids and cones.

Worked example

A square pyramid has base side 6 cm and perpendicular height 10 cm. What is its volume?

120 cm³.

V = Bh/3 = (6²)(10)/3. The slant height is not used in this formula.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Prisms and cylinders use V = Bh.
  • Pyramids and cones use V = Bh/3.
  • Work from the labelled dimensions, not the apparent scale of a diagram.
