Ready to print

Start with a ready-made worksheet

Use the labelled dimensions, include every exposed face, and round only the final answer to hundredths.

Download the practice pages alone, or include a separate answer key or teacher model. Longer activities may use more than one page.

Account for every outside face

The diagrams distinguish base measurements, perpendicular solid heights and face slant heights. Use the printed labels because the sketches are not to scale.

Start with a focused shape family

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Find the total external surface area of a closed solid from its base and lateral faces.

Worked example

A closed cylinder has radius 3 cm and height 5 cm. What is its surface area?

48 pi cm², approximately 150.80 cm².

Add two circular bases and the curved surface: 2 pi(3²) + 2 pi(3)(5).

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Separate base area from lateral area.
  • A pyramid face uses its slant height; the solid height is perpendicular to the base.
  • Choose a single solid before mixing shape families.
