Ready to print

Start with a ready-made worksheet

Use the labelled lengths, not the apparent drawing size. Explain similarity or sketch the requested scaled solid.

Download the practice pages alone, or include a separate answer key or teacher model. Longer activities may use more than one page.

One scale factor must fit every length

Use the printed corresponding dimensions instead of judging the apparent drawing size. Sketch tasks state a positive scale factor and the key labels every resulting dimension.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Recognize and construct solids whose corresponding lengths share one scale factor.

Worked example

A cylinder has radius 3 and height 5. What are these lengths after enlargement by a factor of 2?

Radius 6 and height 10.

Every corresponding length is multiplied by the same factor. Doubling only the radius would change the shape.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Match corresponding dimensions before finding ratios.
  • A scaled sketch may be rotated without changing similarity.
  • Keep exact fractional lengths when the scale factor is a fraction.
