Transform every vertex on the same coordinate grid

Every sheet has six coordinate grids from -5 through 5. Plot the image of each original solid-outline polygon on the same grid. The answer key keeps the original in ink and adds the image with a blue dashed outline and marked vertices.

Apply the stated left, right, up or down change to every vertex. Translations preserve orientation, side lengths and area.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Apply an integer translation to every vertex while preserving side lengths, area and orientation.

Worked example

Translate the point (-2, 1) 4 right and 3 down.

(2, -2).

Add 4 to x and subtract 3 from y: (-2 + 4, 1 - 3) = (2, -2). Apply the same changes to every polygon vertex.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Rewrite left and down as negative coordinate changes before moving vertices.
  • Translate every vertex by the same ordered pair, then reconnect them in the original order.
  • Check that corresponding sides stay parallel and equal in length.
  • A translation preserves polygon orientation and area even when the original overlaps its image.
