Transform every vertex on the same coordinate grid

Every sheet has six coordinate grids from -5 through 5. Plot the image of each original solid-outline polygon on the same grid. The answer key keeps the original in ink and adds the image with a blue dashed outline and marked vertices.

Reflect every vertex across the named axis, diagonal or offset mirror line. The answer key adds the mirror line; corresponding points sit at equal perpendicular distances from it.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Apply exact coordinate reflection rules and recognize the mirror line as the perpendicular bisector of corresponding points.

Worked example

Reflect the point (3, -1) across y = x.

(-1, 3).

Reflection across y = x swaps the coordinates, so (x, y) becomes (y, x).

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • For an axis reflection, change the sign of only the coordinate perpendicular to that axis.
  • Across y = x swap coordinates; across y = -x swap them and change both signs.
  • For x = k or y = k, count equal perpendicular distances on opposite sides of the mirror line.
  • A reflection preserves side lengths and area magnitude but reverses polygon orientation.
