Ready to print

Start with a ready-made worksheet

Name each shape and find the requested measurements. Use the displayed dimensions, including approximate heights and apothems. Round final answers to two decimal places when needed.

Download the practice pages alone, or include a separate answer key or teacher model. Longer activities may use more than one page.

Choose the formula after naming the shape

Trace the outside boundary for perimeter. For area, use the displayed perpendicular height or apothem. Approximate displayed measurements are part of the problem.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Choose the right area and perimeter formulas for a mixed set of shapes.

Worked example

A triangle has base 8 cm and perpendicular height 5 cm. A rectangle has sides 6 cm and 4 cm. Find both areas.

Triangle: 20 cm². Rectangle: 24 cm².

Use half the base times height for a triangle: 8 × 5 ÷ 2 = 20. For a rectangle, multiply its side lengths: 6 × 4 = 24.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Choose a formula from the type of shape before calculating.
  • A height or apothem is perpendicular to the corresponding side; it is not always an outside edge.
  • Whole dimensions keeps primary measurements whole where possible. Derived heights, sides and apothems may still be decimals.
  • Nine questions sample the selected types; selecting more than nine types does not put every type on each sheet.

Nine problems balance the selected triangles, quadrilaterals and regular polygons. Whole-number mode keeps primary dimensions whole where possible; derived sides, heights and apothems may remain decimal.
