Use the measurements that are printed

The apothem is perpendicular to a side and is displayed to four decimal places. Use that displayed approximation for A = nsa/2, then round area to two decimal places. Whole-number mode changes the side length only.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Use P = ns and A = Pa ÷ 2 to measure regular polygons.

Worked example

A regular hexagon has side length 4 cm and approximate apothem 3.4641 cm. Find its perimeter and area using these measurements.

Perimeter = 24 cm; area ≈ 41.57 cm².

P = 6 × 4 = 24. Using the displayed apothem, A ≈ 24 × 3.4641 ÷ 2 = 41.5692, which rounds to 41.57 cm².

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • The apothem runs from the center perpendicular to a side.
  • Use the displayed approximate apothem so your calculation agrees with the key.
  • Whole side lengths keeps side lengths integral; apothems can still be approximate decimals.

Nine diagrams ask for the polygon type and your selected measurements. Whole-number mode applies only to side lengths; area uses the displayed four-decimal-place approximate apothem.
