One output for every input

Each sheet contains eight mapping diagrams, balanced between four functions and four nonfunctions. The displayed target set may include unused values, and several inputs may share one output.

Choose numeric labels, letter labels or both. Each side makes its own choice, so mixed number-to-letter and letter-to-number relations appear when both types are enabled.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Decide whether every displayed input maps to exactly one output.

Worked example

The arrows are 0→8, 4→5, 5→7, 6→7 and 8→5. Is the mapping a function?

Yes.

Every listed input has one output. Repeated outputs are allowed, and an unused value in the target set does not change the classification.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Check one input at a time.
  • Count distinct outputs from each input.
  • Allow two inputs to point to the same target.
  • Keep unused target values visible.
  • Treat equal-looking labels on opposite sides as separate nodes.
