For each table, substitute every x value into the displayed rule and calculate its output. In decimal mode, round to the nearest thousandth when necessary.

Download the practice pages alone, or include a separate answer key or teacher model. Longer activities may use more than one page.

One relationship, several pairs

Match each input with its output before calculating. A rule applies to every pair in the same table; it does not describe the gaps between consecutive inputs.

The preview shows the first student page. Downloads include every practice page; the version with answers adds a separate key with the same table positions. Longer notes or translated instructions may add pages.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Evaluate a linear rule in the correct operation order and connect equation notation with a table of input-output pairs.

Worked example

For y = −2x + 3, find the outputs for x = −1, 0 and 4.

5, 3 and −5

Multiply each input by negative two first, then add three. For x = −1, the product is 2, giving 5. For x = 4, the product is −8, giving −5.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Choose from y = x + b, y = mx, y = mx + b and fractional-slope rules. Selected families are balanced across twelve tables in a shuffled order.
  • Nonnegative inputs include zero. This choice does not prevent negative outputs because the slope or intercept may be negative.
  • The worked-example option fills all five outputs in the first table; the remaining eleven tables stay available for practice.
  • Function notation f(x) names the output of the rule at x. It is not f multiplied by x.
  • Exact fractions avoid rounding. Decimal mode keeps exact terminating values through three places and marks rounded values as approximate.
