Ready to print

Start with a ready-made worksheet

Complete the eight given-rule tables. Use three complete pairs to identify the rule and one missing output in each of the final six tables.

Download the practice pages alone, or include a separate answer key or teacher model. Longer activities may use more than one page.

One relationship, several pairs

Match each input with its output before calculating. A rule applies to every pair in the same table; it does not describe the gaps between consecutive inputs.

The preview shows the first student page. Downloads include every practice page; the version with answers adds a separate key with the same table positions. Longer notes or translated instructions may add pages.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Recognize a multiplicative relationship and use inverse operations to check each input-output pair.

Worked example

A table shows 18 → 3, 42 → 7 and 60 → 10. What is the rule, and what follows 54?

Divide by 6; 54 → 9.

Each input is six times its matching output. Dividing every input by six agrees with all three pairs and gives an exact quotient.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • The level selects base numbers: 0–10, 10–45 or 45–80. In multiplication, the base is the input. In division, it is the quotient, so the printed input can be much larger.
  • All division answers are whole numbers with no remainder. Divisors are selected from 2 through 12.
  • A zero-to-zero pair fits every selected factor. Use the other complete pairs to identify the rule.
  • Mixed operation practice includes multiplication and division; read each rule before calculating rather than carrying the previous rule into the next table.
