Start with a ready-made worksheet

Read the seven given terms. Test a rule from the selected families against every transition, then write the final three terms.

Download the practice pages alone, or include a separate answer key or teacher model. Longer activities may use more than one page.

Read the clues before filling a box

Locate the given terms and check the rule across every visible transition. When clues begin in the middle, work in both directions rather than treating the first visible number as the start.

The preview shows the first student page. Downloads contain every student page; the version with answers adds a separate key with matching row positions. Long notes or rule explanations may require more than one page.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Distinguish a previous-two-term rule from an alternating pair of operations and verify it against every given term.

Worked example

Continue 2, 4, 7, 14, 17, 34, 37, __, __, __.

74, 77, 154

Alternate multiplying by two and adding three, starting with multiplication. After 37 comes 74, then 77, then 154.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Fibonacci begins with 0 and 1; each later term is the sum of the previous two. Selecting only Fibonacci makes one focused row.
  • Selecting any other family makes ten rows, including each selected family. Fibonacci appears at most once.
  • Alternating rules begin with the first named operation. Addition/subtraction rules start by adding; multiplication rules start by multiplying.
  • A finite list can fit many mathematical rules. Ask for a rule from the selected families that agrees with all given terms, rather than claiming the prefix determines a unique rule.
