Ready to print

Start with a ready-made worksheet

Read the leftmost and rightmost attained x-values for the domain, then the lowest and highest attained y-values for the range. Use brackets only for included extrema.

Download the practice pages alone, or include a separate answer key or teacher model. Longer activities may use more than one page.

Read every attained extreme

Each sheet contains eight finite curves on grids from −5 to 5. Domain and range answers use exact interval notation; open and closed bounds follow whether an extreme is attained anywhere on the curve.

Turn on function classification to add the vertical line test without changing the curves.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Use the horizontal and vertical extent of a finite graph to write exact domain and range intervals.

Worked example

A curve runs from an open point at (−2, 4) to an open point at (2, −4).

Domain (−2, 2); range (−4, 4).

Neither endpoint is included, and this segment has no interior point at either extreme.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Find horizontal extent for domain.
  • Find vertical extent for range.
  • An interior turning point is included.
  • Check whether an extreme occurs more than once.
  • Use the vertical line test only when the function question is shown.
