Start with a ready-made worksheet

Read each number and write even or odd on the line. Check the ones digit, or use pairs when you need a concrete model.

Choose a useful starting range

Every page contains twenty distinct numbers from the selected inclusive range, including both parities. Start with 0–20 and move to larger values once the learner can explain the ones-digit rule.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Classify a whole number using pairs or the value of its ones digit.

Worked example

Is 138 even or odd?

Even.

The ones digit is 8. Every group of ten can be paired, and eight remaining ones also make complete pairs.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Use the 0–20 preset after learners can explain complete pairs and one leftover. The default ready-made sheet uses 0–50.
  • The even ones digits are 0, 2, 4, 6 and 8; the odd ones digits are 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9. Explain why complete tens leave only the ones to check.
  • Compare 18, 118 and 198. Their size changes, but the final digit keeps the parity the same.
  • All twenty values on one sheet are distinct. Reusing the same settings and seed reproduces the same list for another learner or a later discussion.
