Choose a useful starting range

There are three grids and sixty distinct values: sixteen odd-only decisions, sixteen even-only decisions and twenty-eight decisions covering both parities. In the first two grids, correctly leaving a cell neutral matters just as much as coloring a requested cell.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Apply an even-or-odd rule consistently while following a different selection instruction for each grid.

Worked example

An odd-only grid contains 24 and 35. What should you color?

Color 35 amber and leave 24 uncolored.

35 is odd because its ones digit is 5. Although 24 is even, this particular grid asks for odd numbers only.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Read the instruction above each grid before starting. Leaving a cell neutral is the correct choice when that grid does not request its parity.
  • The first two grids each have sixteen cells; the final grid has twenty-eight. Work on one grid at a time if sixty decisions are too much for one sitting.
  • Every value on a worksheet is different, and each grid contains both even and odd numbers. Do not expect the shuffled cells to alternate.
  • Use the words even and odd during checking. The answer key labels the selected cells as well as coloring them, and keeps unselected cells neutral.
