Choose a useful starting range

There are three grids and sixty distinct values: sixteen odd-only decisions, sixteen even-only decisions and twenty-eight decisions covering both parities. In the first two grids, correctly leaving a cell neutral matters just as much as coloring a requested cell.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Use the ones digit to classify larger whole numbers while retaining the selection rule for each grid.

Worked example

What happens to 1,503 and 1,520 in an even-only grid?

Leave 1,503 neutral; color 1,520 blue.

The ones digits are 3 and 0. Complete tens and hundreds can be paired, so the ones digit decides whether anything remains.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Choose a range the learner can read comfortably. The rule is unchanged for four-digit values, but reading the numerals adds a separate demand.
  • Compare numbers such as 50, 150 and 1,750. A final zero makes all three even; zero is not a signal to skip the number.
  • The three grids contain sixteen, sixteen and twenty-eight distinct values. Both parities occur in each grid, and no number repeats elsewhere on that sheet.
  • Ask for an explanation for a few cells rather than speed alone. A new seed changes the numbers while preserving the task structure.
