Balance selected number types in one exact-answer sheet

Select integers, decimals, fractions or any combination. Ten questions are divided as evenly as possible across the selected types, with any extra question assigned in integer, decimal, fraction order, then the questions are shuffled reproducibly.

Every question asks for an exact answer. Decimal and fraction questions always show a noninteger input in their selected representation, and the key substitutes the exact result into the original equation.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Choose the inverse operation for a one-step equation while switching accurately among integer, decimal and fraction notation.

Worked example

Solve x + 3/4 = 3/2.

x = 3/4.

Subtract 3/4 from both sides: x = 3/2 − 3/4 = 3/4. Substitution gives 3/4 + 3/4 = 3/2.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Ask learners to name the operation before calculating.
  • Keep fractions exact rather than converting recurring values to rounded decimals.
  • Treat a signed decimal or fraction as one quantity.
  • Use the original displayed representation when checking the result.
