Ready to print

Start with a ready-made worksheet

Choose at least one structure. Distribute and collect terms carefully, keeping exact values for checks before reporting the answer to the nearest hundredth. With all eleven selected, one structure is omitted per ten-question sheet.

Download the practice pages alone, or include a separate answer key or teacher model. Longer activities may use more than one page.

Read eleven structures in their original order

Choose structures that combine variable terms, collect constants, distribute groups or put variables on both sides. Reversed equality and constant-first groups retain their displayed order. Signed operands use whole-number or half-step decimal values, and every question has one exact solution.

There are ten questions. With up to ten structures selected, every selected structure appears. When all eleven are selected, exactly one is omitted, and the omission varies with the seed. Carry exact values through solving and substitution before reporting a rounded decimal.

Keep the original printable edition available

These earlier worksheets practice the original set of multi-step structures. The current downloads above use the eleven-structure edition. Earlier settings links retain the original edition until the structure selection changes or you choose Reset settings.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Read a decimal equation in its supplied order, simplify each side and isolate the unknown through equivalent transformations.

Worked example

Solve 1.5(2x − 0.4) + 0.3x = 4.2.

x = 16/11; to the nearest hundredth, 1.45.

Distribution gives 3x − 0.6 + 0.3x = 4.2. Combine terms to get 3.3x − 0.6 = 4.2. Add 0.6, then divide by 3.3: x = 4.8/3.3 = 16/11.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Read which side contains a group before expanding it.
  • Write each product from distribution before combining terms.
  • Keep each decimal term and its sign together.
  • Accept an exact fraction when the quotient does not terminate.
  • Use the rounded answer for reporting and the exact value for verification.
