Choose at least one structure. Distribute and collect terms before isolating the variable. Keep exact fractions for checks, then report answers to the nearest hundredth. With all eleven selected, one structure is omitted per ten-question sheet.
Download the practice pages alone, or include a separate answer key or teacher model. Longer activities may use more than one page.
Customize this worksheetChoose structures that combine variable terms, collect constants, distribute groups or put variables on both sides. Reversed equality and constant-first group choices retain their displayed order. Every question has one exact solution; integer inputs can produce fractional or zero answers.
There are ten questions. With up to ten structures selected, every selected structure appears. When all eleven are selected, exactly one is omitted, and the omission varies with the seed. Carry exact values through solving and substitution before reporting a rounded decimal.
These earlier worksheets practice the original set of multi-step structures. The current downloads above use the eleven-structure edition. Earlier settings links retain the original edition until the structure selection changes or you choose Reset settings.
Choose repeated variable terms, two constants, separated like terms, groups on either side, constant-first groups, an outside constant with a group, or distribution with variables on both sides. Some choices reverse the equality orientation so learners practice reading the original relationship in that order.
Each worksheet has ten questions. With one to ten structures selected, every selected structure appears and their question counts differ by at most one. With all eleven selected, exactly one is omitted on that sheet. A new seed can omit a different structure.
Yes. For 3x = 5, the exact root is 5/3. Keep that fraction for checking the equation and separately report its nearest-hundredth approximation, 1.67.
Nearest-hundredth answers use ties away from zero: 0.325 becomes 0.33 and −0.325 becomes −0.33. Keys retain exact roots and show two decimal places in the rounded report, including integers and zero.
The original downloads remain available below. Earlier settings links keep their original questions when common settings or New problems change. Choosing a different structure selection switches to the current edition. Reset settings opens the current edition with all eleven structures selected.
Learning objective
Read an equation in its supplied order, simplify each side and isolate the unknown through equivalent transformations.
Worked example
x = 15/7; to the nearest hundredth, 2.14.
Distribute to obtain 6x − 3 = 12 − x. Add x to both sides, then add 3: 7x = 15. Divide by 7. Substituting 15/7 into the original equation makes both sides equal to 69/7.
