Start with a ready-made worksheet

For a + bi, move a units along the real axis and b units along the imaginary axis. Read the same two components when identifying a plotted point.

Download the practice pages alone, or include a separate answer key or teacher model. Longer activities may use more than one page.

Give each component a direction

The real axis is horizontal. The imaginary axis records the coefficient of i vertically. A real-only number lies on the horizontal axis; an imaginary-only number lies on the vertical axis.

Choose six plot questions, six identify questions or three of each. Every question has its own coordinate plane with values from −5 to 5.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Connect a + bi with the point whose real coordinate is a and imaginary coordinate is b.

Worked example

Where does −2 + 4i lie on the complex plane?

Two units left and four units up from the origin.

The real component −2 determines the horizontal position. The coefficient 4 of i determines the vertical position.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Name each axis before plotting the first point.
  • Use the origin to check the direction of each move.
  • Practice real-only and imaginary-only numbers on the axes.
  • Switch from plotting to reading points once the axis meanings are secure.
