Choose a skill before mixing the operations

Sums and differences build confidence with like terms. Imaginary monomial products introduce repeated factors of i and distribution. Binomial practice adds two-factor products, squares and an imaginary factor multiplying two binomials.

The ten-question set balances the selected groups. A single set need not contain every expression shape; New problems produces a fresh reproducible set.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Use distribution and i² = −1 to simplify complex expressions into standard form.

Worked example

Simplify (3 + 2i)(4 − i).

14 + 5i.

Distribution gives 12 − 3i + 8i − 2i². Replacing i² with −1 changes −2i² into +2, leaving 14 + 5i.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Start with sums and differences before mixing in products.
  • Show a separate line when replacing i².
  • Treat a binomial square as a product of two identical factors.
  • For three factors, simplify one product before multiplying by the remaining factor.
