Start with a ready-made worksheet
Write an expression for each phrase. Keep the stated variable names, check subtraction and division order, and use parentheses when an operation acts on a whole group.
Download the practice pages alone, or include a separate answer key or teacher model. Longer activities may use more than one page.
Easy phrases introduce a short expression with one variable. Medium phrases add fractional coefficients and grouped quantities. Hard phrases use two variables, more terms and squared or cubed quantities. Select one level or combine levels in a ten-question set.
A separate answer key repeats each question and explains the transformation. Use the space on the student sheet for an expression, an expansion or substitution steps, rather than recording only a final answer.
Learning objective
What this activity builds
Translate a verbal relationship into an expression with the correct operands, operations and grouping.
Worked example
Three times the sum of x and 4, decreased by twice y.
3(x + 4) − 2y.
The sum is x + 4. Three times that whole sum is 3(x + 4), and decreasing it by twice y gives 3(x + 4) − 2y. The equivalent expanded expression 3x + 12 − 2y is also valid.
Teaching notes
Make the practice count
Begin with one variable and one familiar operation.
Underline the quantity governed by each operation.
Compare a grouped phrase with the same words without grouping.
Accept equivalent expressions when they preserve the described relationship.

Choose one or more levels. Hard questions include two variables, rational coefficients, grouped quantities, and squares or cubes.
A printable guide to the language of algebra. Connect words with addition, subtraction, products, quotients, equality and grouping, with examples that explain operand order.
Evaluate expressions using two distinct variable values. Select sums, grouped multiplication and exact-division forms with whole numbers or integers, plus an explained answer key.
