Ready to print

Start with a ready-made worksheet

Write the given value in place of every variable. Use parentheses around negative inputs, then calculate grouped operations, products and quotients before the remaining sums.

Download the practice pages alone, or include a separate answer key or teacher model. Longer activities may use more than one page.

Keep the inputs separate from the coefficients

Choose whole-number or signed integer values for the variables. A whole-number input does not make every coefficient or final answer positive: the expression can still contain subtraction and signed terms. Each question prints its own bindings.

In division questions, a variable can appear in the numerator or denominator. Substitute into that exact position and keep the sign of a negative divisor. Inputs are chosen so denominators are nonzero and quotients are integers; some numerator inputs therefore exceed 9. The key shows substitution before calculation.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Replace every occurrence of a variable with its given value and calculate in the correct order.

Worked example

Evaluate 30/x + 2x when x = −5.

30/(−5) + 2(−5) = −6 − 10 = −16.

Replace both occurrences of x with −5. In the first term it is the divisor, so 30 is divided by −5. In the second term it is multiplied by 2. Calculate both terms before adding.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Start with a positive input and a short expression.
  • Write substitution as a separate step before arithmetic.
  • Check every repeated occurrence of the variable.
  • Introduce negative inputs after multiplication and subtraction with signed numbers are secure.

Whole-number inputs are positive; integer inputs use both signs. Division can place the variable above or below the fraction bar. Some inputs are larger so each quotient stays exact.
